At the Movies!
March 22, 2007
Out of the movement to write a new constitution for Alabama, a new movie has just been released. Entitled It’s a Thick Book, this movie will have an impact on our efforts to bring the kind of change necessary to have a fundamental impact on moving Alabama citizens out of poverty.
I’ve seen the movie twice. It’s educational, but listen, it’s entertaining too. I’m not kidding – laugh out loud funny in several places.
You need to see it! Here’s a list of upcoming showings. Take your friends when it’s in your part of the state:

Constitution Reform Bills in the House! (And the Senate)
While at the ACCR site, check out information about new bills that have been introduced, to give the people of Alabama a chance to vote on having a constitutional convention. You can read the bills there.
But contact your legislators to tell them you support these bills. Ask them to support them too! You can find your legislator at this link. Just fill in your zip code and go.
The Legislators’ Raise
I’m of the mind that legislators should be well paid. But I wonder about the amount of the raise Alabama’s legislators voted for themselves. One in the group who voted against it, Patricia Todd, wrote in her own blog, “I could not vote in favor of this pay raise when so many residents of House District 54 live in poverty.”
Good point.
Representative Todd has drafted legislation that would raise the minimum wage in Alabama. She also intends to propose a Poverty Task Force and an Affordable Housing Task Force. I applaud these ideas and hope the best for these initiatives. Read her blog here.
